Criteria for the Cabarrus Sustainability Award included innovation, sustainability, partnerships, superior environmental practices, measurable environmental benefits and commitment/leadership in pursuit of sustainability.

To receive the Cabarrus Sustainability Award, the Embassy Suites Charlotte - Concord demonstrated success across multiple categories. Award-winning outcomes originated from initiatives ranging from lighting fixture replacement that resulted in nearly 90 percent reduction in fixture energy consumption to responsible recycling of printer cartridges throughout the facility.
Dakeita Vanderburg-Johnson, Cabarrus Sustainability Council Chair for 2011, noted that the Embassy Suites Charlotte - Concord is setting a positive example for others to seek. Recently, the Embassy Suites Charlotte - Concord/Golf Resort & Spa received the prestigious Eco Carolinas Certification for recycling and waste reduction for the third consecutive year. Neil Swiacki, president of Environmental Carolinas, which awards the Eco Carolinas Certification, indicated that the hotel's environmental practices reflect their overall business approach.
